What’s happening now with the Wake County Schools
January 19, 2016
Capped Schools
We will know very soon about the school caps for Wake County. Cary, Holly Springs and Apex are in the Wake County School District. Six schools have been proposed to be added to the capped list, Fuquay-Varina High School, Apex Middle School and Cedar Fork, Davis Drive, Fuquay-Varina and Wiley elementary Schools. Davis Drive Middle will likely be uncapped for 2016-2017. (That would be great for Cary!)
The schools proposed to stay capped are Enloe (Raleigh), Heritage (Wake Forest) and Panther Creek high schools(Cary); Mills Park Middle; and Hodge Road, Holly Grove, Hunter, Mills Park and Walnut Creek elementary schools.
Last year Davis Drive Middle School was capped and a big surprise to many. So, anything can happen with the school board. I will keep you updated on the final plan for the capped schools and the overflow schools.

From Traditional Calendar to Year Around Schools
Other changes for Wake County Schools include a proposal to change 9 schools from traditional calendar to year around 4 track schools. This doesn’t affect Cary, Apex or Holly Springs because low performing schools with lower income demographics are being considered for the change. Year around schools have more school days and less time off. It is hoped this extra time in school will help student performance.
Apex High a Tear Down?
Another possible change is a concern for Cary/Apex. My clients have been looking forward to the new Green Level High School opening in August 2016 because Panther Creek High in Cary is capped. The plan has been for the first year 2016-2017 to have Green Level High only open to students from Apex High while that school is renovated. Then the Green Level students would go back to Apex and the school would open for Cary. There is a proposal now to tear Apex High down and build a new school on the site. It isn’t funded yet and development projects always take longer than estimated (and cost more too). The proposal would have Apex students at Green Level for an additional year 2017-2018. I can see that stretching on.
I know it’s hard to think about a move with the confusing school situation but it isn’t as bad as it sounds. The overflow schools can be farther away but nothing is far away in Cary so in reality it is usually just a few miles. Let me know what questions you have and I’ll help you through it.
